For this review, we shot entirely in ProRes 422, which on the BMPCC 4K is merely a midrange quality option, but it easily outclasses what’s available on most mirrorless cameras. Cameras like the Panasonic GH5-series and the Fujifilm X-T3 offer high-bitrate codecs with comparable quality to ProRes, but they aren’t edit-ready and will run much slower on a computer unless transcoded first. ProRes footage, on the other hand, can be dropped straight onto a timeline in most popular editing programs and manipulated with ease.

Despite no continuous autofocus, there is autofocus on board, and it works with either a single tap of the screen, just like a smartphone, or by hitting the focus button on the back of the camera. The sensor utilizes the native 400 ISO setting up to 1,000 ISO. At 1,250 ISO, the camera jumps to the low noise range of the native 3,200 ISO setting. We saw noise start at ISO 400 and was acceptable all the way up to ISO 6400. After that, the noise starts to dramatically affect the sharpness of the image.

You can’t even turn off noise reduction on an FX3, whereas this Pyxis seems to be a full-blown cine camera. The camera isn’t perfect, but what can you expect for a $1,300 camera? That large screen consumes a lot of juice, and we went through four batteries in just under 2.5 hours. That isn’t so bad by itself — the camera uses widely available Canon LP-E6 batteries — but the camera will also shut down without warning if the battery gets too low.

At the base is a battery door which is removable, to the left sits a dual card slot while to the right are all the ports. A good selection of ports is a must for shooting video, as many will want the ability to connect gear like external mics or a larger video monitor. Fortunately the Pocket Cinema 4K is well stocked for port options. Though it already packs higher-quality microphones (4 in total) than we’ve seen from the Blackmagic Pocket series before, you also get a 3.5mm headphone out and separate 3.5mm microphone in.

If you are a one-person crew, you may want to hold off — but even then, it’s not a solid no. You may yet be able to make this camera work for you, just know you’ll have to clear some small hurdles first.

The combination of Black Magic's cameras, editing software and editing hardware makes for a high quality, very streamlined and very economical workflow. Kudos to BM for listening to users, and not least for offering a software with (so far) unlimited upgrades without additional fees, and a very functional free version for those on a budget. It’s not really viable in the context of showing something to a director while other people twiddle their thumbs. @panther fan well it's a box camera, which some people really want. It would be more fair to compare S5IIX to BMCC6K because they share the form factor. And if you aim to shoot BRAW, then BM camera is actually cheaper than Lumix + BM Video Assist + Davinci license.
Maybe there’s also something about vibration that would bother a hinged screen? This camera in stripped down form will spend time on drones, the outside of moving vehicles, etc. But, more importantly, there is a huge amount of nominally stills EF lenses floating around that are now used for video.
The main topside buttons include a record button and a 4K stills capture button along with quick access to ISO, shutter angle and white balance. Three handy customizable function buttons are also in easy reach as too is the power switch.
